The Catalan independence movement Catalan: The Estelada flag , which has a "blue" and a "red" version, has become its main symbol.

Following Franco's death in , Catalan political parties concentrated on autonomy rather than independence. The modern independence movement began in when the Constitutional Court of Spain ruled that some of the articles of the Statute of Autonomy —which had been agreed with the Spanish government and passed by a referendum in Catalonia—were unconstitutional, and others were to be interpreted restrictively.

Popular protest against the decision quickly turned into demands for independence. Starting with the town of Arenys de Munt , over municipalities in Catalonia held symbolic referendums on independence between and The popular movement fed upwards to the politicians; a second mass protest on 11 September the National Day of Catalonia explicitly called on the Catalan government to begin the process towards independence.

Catalan president Artur Mas called a snap general election, which resulted in a pro-independence majority for the first time in the region's history.

The new parliament adopted the Catalan Sovereignty Declaration in early , asserting that the Catalan people had the right to decide their own political future.

The Government of Catalonia announced a referendum, to be held in November , on the question of statehood.

The referendum was to ask two questions: The Government of Catalonia then changed it from a binding referendum to a non-binding "consultation".

Despite the Spanish court also banning the non-binding vote, the Catalan self-determination referendum went ahead on 9 November Mas called another election for September , which he said would be a plebiscite on independence.

The following year, new president Carles Puigdemont , announced a binding referendum on independence. Although deemed illegal by the Spanish government and Constitutional Court, the referendum was held on 1 October Based on this result, on 27 October the Parliament of Catalonia approved a resolution creating an independent Republic unilaterally, by a vote considered illegal by the lawyers of the Parliament of Catalonia for violating the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Spain.

The latter supports a legal and agreed referendum. The Principality of Catalonia was a territory of the Crown of Aragon in the late 15th century, when Aragon was united with the Crown of Castile to form what would become the Kingdom of Spain.

Initially, the various territories of Aragon, including Catalonia, kept their own fueros laws and customs and political institutions.

After a decade of war, the Spanish Monarchy counter-attacked in and recovered Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia, except for Roussillon , which was annexed by France.

Catalonia retained its fueros. During the War of Spanish Succession , most of the territories of the Crown of Aragon supported Archduke Charles , the Habsburg contender, [8] against the Bourbon contender.

This left the Catalan government isolated, but it remained loyal to Charles. After a month siege, Barcelona surrendered to a Bourbon army on 11 September The end of the war was followed by the loss of the fueros of all Crown of Aragon territories, including Catalonia, and the imposition of the Nueva Planta decrees , which centralised Spanish government.

The beginnings of separatism in Catalonia can be traced back to the mid—19th century. Following Franco's death in , Spain moved to restore democracy.

A new constitution was adopted in , which asserted the "indivisible unity of the Spanish Nation", but acknowledged "the right to autonomy of the nationalities and regions which form it".

The Crida organised a series of protests that culminated in a massive demonstration in the Camp Nou on 24 June There was a surge of popular protest against it.

In March , it was held to be ultra vires by the Spanish Constitutional Court. The government produced a draft for a new Statute of Autonomy , which was supported by the CiU and was approved by the parliament by a large majority.

The statute was approved, but turnout was only The Partido Popular , which had opposed the statute in the Spanish parliament, challenged its constitutionality in the Spanish High Court of Justice.

The case lasted four years. The affected articles included those that gave preference to the Catalan language, freed Catalonia from responsibility for the finances of other autonomous communities, and recognised Catalonia as a nation.

During and after the court case, a series of symbolic referendums on independence were held in municipalities throughout Catalonia. The first of these was in the town of Arenys de Munt on 13 September The two leaders drafted the Declaration of Sovereignty and of the Right to Decide of the Catalan People , which was adopted by the parliament at its first sitting in January The declaration stated that "the Catalan people have, for reasons of democratic legitimacy, the nature of a sovereign political and legal subject", and that the people had the right to decide their own political future.

Puigdemont, on taking the oath of office, omitted the oath of loyalty to the king and the Spanish constitution, the first Catalan president to do so.

Further pro-independence demonstrations took place in Barcelona in September , and in Barcelona, Berga , Lleida , Salt and Tarragona in September In late September , Puigdemont told the parliament that a binding referendum on independence would be held in the second half of September , with or without the consent of the Spanish institutions.

A law creating an independent republic —in the event that the referendum took place and there was a majority "yes" vote, without requiring a minimum turnout—was approved by the Catalan parliament in a session on 6 September The referendum took place on 1 October , despite being suspended by the Constitutional Court, and despite the action of Spanish police to prevent voting in some centres.

Puigdemont said during his appearance in the Catalan parliament that he assumes, in presenting the results of the referendum, "the people's mandate for Catalonia to become an independent state in the form of a republic", but proposed that in the following weeks the parliament "suspends the effect of the declaration of independence to engage in a dialogue to reach an agreed solution" with the Spanish Government.

On 27 October the Catalan Parliament voted in a secret ballot to approve a resolution declaring independence from Spain by a vote of 70—10 in the absence of the constitutionalist deputies, who refused to participate in a vote considered illegal for violating the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Spain.

As a result, article of the Spanish constitution was triggered, the Catalan government was dismissed and direct rule was imposed from the central government in Madrid.

The three pro-independence parties retained their control of parliament with a reduced majority of 70 seats and a combined Ines Arrimadas ' anti-independence Ciudadanos party was the most voted party with Parties which endorsed the suspension of autonomy by central government represented They obtained 34, 32 and 4 seats, respectively, in the Catalan election a total of 70 out of seats , with an overall share of This was two seats and 0.

From around , support for Catalan independence broadened from being the preserve of traditional left or far-left Catalan nationalism.

All of the Spanish national political parties in Catalonia reject the idea of independence. Together they represent a majority of votes yet a minority of seats in the Catalan parliament.

Of these, only Podemos is prepared to hold a referendum on the issue in Catalonia; [88] others such as Ciutadans , [89] and the People's Party of Catalonia , [90] which had The Socialists' Party While some of its members supported the idea of a self-determination referendum up until , [91] the official position as of is that the Spanish Constitution should be reformed in order to better accommodate Catalonia.

On 8 October , Societat Civil Catalana gathered over a million people according to the organizers and the Spanish government and , people according to Barcelona police, in a rally against Catalan independence.

To date this event was the largest pro-Constitution and anti-independence demonstration in the history of Catalonia.

On 12 October , 65, people, according to the Barcelona local police, marched against independence in a smaller demonstration marking the Spanish national day.

Will return for sure. You can definitely do the main attractions in 3 days I highly recommend going to Monserrat Consider staying away from town center think about Eixample or Montjouc area not as much street noise Definitely beach spot in summer to fall Catalonian wines amazing try local spot tapas.

Barcelona Catalonia area was wonderful. The people were kind, not too fast paced, still a fun place for young adult traveler. There were a number a great eats, I loved Tapas Locas.

The history architecture and culture is so rich! If I could move tomorrow I would. My opinion is iffy when it comes to the local people, we have met some very very kind and welcoming Catalan people of Arenys de Mar and Arenys de Munt but also we have met MORE rude and uninterested locals towards Americans or English speaking people.

They do not want to help you or communicate with you at all if you speak English. May be that there is a political problems they are dealing with regarding their independence from Spain.

All I have noticed is that a smile or hello will not win you over to them—they will not acknowledge you. Barcelona has unique gorgeous architecture.

It is a very clean and visually attractive city. Gaudi put a beautiful stamp on the place in multiple areas.

They have great tapas and paella. They love their ham. Beware the politics and avoid it. They are in conflict and would like to be independent of spain as state of catalonia.

People are generally polite and friendly. Barcelona is highly overrated compared to other cities in Spain, oops, I mean Catalonia.

Pickpockets abound here feasting on the unsuspecting tourists. We were warned by taxi drivers, hotel staff, waiters etc. A couple in our hotel had passports and cellphone stolen one night.

The hosts were super helpful, attentive, and friendly. They met us when we arrived late at night, showed where to park.

They made us catalonial breakfast all from scratch, baked bread, muffins they have different name and made with olive oil , some kind of mushroom pie, so delicious, also meet, cheese, jam, explained how to rub tomatoes on a bread - catalonial style.

The property was a little old, but very cute, with plants and gardens all over outside and inside little yard where we had breakfast.

My wife and I really enjoyed our staying at the Barcelona Century Hotel because it is located in a typical Catalonian neighborhood with affordable restaurants and mini-markets close to the hotel.

Metro station "Hospital Clinic" was about three blocks away and that allowed us to move around Barcelona. The hotel has very ample and comfortable rooms, and the staff was very attentive.

Staff was excellant specialy the manager Mr Meguel who is very responsive with positive attitude. Location is in quite area and walking distance from the very active area, plaza Catalonia and best shoping areas.

I enjoyed the shower with high water flow both hot and cold. Also tolet has water which satisfy muslims need. Hotel is very clean and modern style.

I have been a week in Catalonia area and stayed in 7 different similarly priced hotels. This was definitely the best of them. Clean, beautiful building, nice old furniture, very quiet and close to the train station and a Carrefour supermarket.

The breakfast buffet was superb, special contrast to stuff I got at all other hotels. Staff was very kind.
